Best known for the Orange River that provides the lifeblood to this arid region, and the Kimberley Diamond Mines, the Northern Cape inspires travelers who like exploring the unbeaten tracks. One of the first regions to be ventured into by the early Dutch settlers, the Northern Cape has a long history in colonial frontier expansion, but also reaches back thousands of years to its first inhabitants, the San, Nama and Khoekhoe. Discover South Africa’s northernmost wine region in the district of Upington situated in the fruitful Orange River valley; the mystical roaring white sand dunes at Olifantshoek; the lush Kameeldoring forests at Kathu; the glistening freshwater oasis of the Kuruman Eye; inexhaustible iron ore and manganese mines at Hotazel, Dibeng and Sishen; or the untamed Kalahari game farms in the surrounds of Van Zyl’s rus, flanking the Molopo riverbed which marks the border to Botswana.
