Cape Town Metro comprises the city centre of Cape Town, urban areas bordering the city such as Green Point, Maitland and Paarden Eiland, the northern suburbs, southern suburbs, and the so-called Cape Flats. The northern suburbs from Melkbosstrand in the far north, Brackenfell to the north-east and Elsiesriver to the east are mirrored by the southern suburbs of Pinelands, Tokai - situated on the foot of Steenberg Mountains (unofficial beginning of the Cape Peninsula - and Grassy Park to the south-east. The Cape Flats are the third slice of the metro area, beginning just east of the city and stretching down to the False Bay coast. It is a low-lying, sandy, wind-swept flatland which supports dense residential areas and informal settlements (so-called townships) - a relic of the apartheid past of the country.
